Highgate Cemetery - Hydroseeding

The Highgate Cemetery project involved hydroseeding 284 square metres of the main entrance verge with Hurrells P7 Dry / Sandy Soils Wildflower Seed Mix at 100% wildflowers.

The challenge

Green Care Solutions was appointed to carry out specialist hydroseeding works to one of the main entrance verges at Highgate Cemetery. The 284m² area required a planting solution suitable for dry, sandy and well-drained soil conditions, while also complementing the natural character of this historic London cemetery. The specification called for a diverse wildflower mix capable of establishing in potentially drought-prone conditions, while supporting biodiversity and creating valuable habitat for pollinators and other wildlife.

Our solution

We hydroseeded the 284m² entrance verge using Hurrells P7 Dry / Sandy Soils Wildflower Seed Mix, specified as a 100% wildflower mixture. The UK-native mix contains a broad selection of annual and perennial species, including Birdsfoot Trefoil, Common Knapweed, Field Scabious, Lady’s Bedstraw, Oxeye Daisy, Red Campion, Wild Carrot, Yarrow and Yellow Rattle. The mixture was specifically selected for dry and sandy soils, with a range of deep-rooting species designed to seek out moisture in well-drained conditions. To support establishment and long-term vegetation performance, the hydroseeding application also incorporated BioPrime™, JumpStart fertiliser and Flex Terra HP mulch.BioPrime™ was used to support long-term plant vitality and vegetation sustainability, while JumpStart was selected to improve moisture infiltration and retention, encourage nutrient uptake and promote stronger root development. Flex Terra HP provided a high-performance erosion-control mulch to protect the treated area during establishment.

Results

Specialist Wildflower Planting

A tailored hydroseeding specification was applied across 284m² of the main entrance verge using a wildflower mix specifically suited to dry and sandy soil conditions.

Supporting Biodiversity

The selected mix provides habitat and food sources for bees, butterflies, other insects and birds, with many of the species appearing on the RHS Plants for Pollinators wildflower list.

Designed for Long-Term Establishment

The combination of deep-rooting wildflower species, BioPrime™, JumpStart fertiliser and Flex Terra HP mulch was selected to support moisture retention, root development, vegetation establishment and erosion control.

“We were very pleased with the way Green Care Solutions approached the hydroseeding works at Highgate Cemetery. The team were knowledgeable, professional and considerate of the site, and the wildflower mix was carefully selected to suit the conditions while supporting biodiversity. The project was handled smoothly and with real attention to detail.”
